ROLEY COMMITTEE INVITES NEW MEMBERS

Have you been enthusiastic about the Roley Lectureships and pleased about the opportunity to hear nationally recognized speakers as well as providing this opportunity to the greater San Antonio community? Would you like to participate in the work of the Roley Committee?
The committee meets irregularly. Major tasks include (1) decision making with regard to use of funds and to invitations to speakers, and (2)logistics related to the actual events--registration, hospitality, ushering, transportation for speaker. We're in the process of getting ready for another collaboration with the Dykes Foundation, bringing John Dominic Crossan to San Antonio May 11-12.

The proceeds from those sales go to our mission trip scholarship fund and help individuals that would otherwise not be able to do so attend trips. If you are interested in helping, we set up folding chairs, sell tickets, and take down folding chairs for both the day and night parade. You don't have to do everything; whatever help you can offer is appreciated. MSPC Book Group

“I have painted the porous, crumbling concrete of my house. Two plastic mats serve as my couch and bed. Abi helped me pick out a lantern at the market in Ferke so I may survive past dusk. A kerosene stove sits on the floor in the corner, and there is a line of edibles along the wall. (Eating suddenly seems a chore. There’s nothing quick to prepare except mutant Quaker oats from the UAE, so I have oatmeal for breakfast, oatmeal for lunch.) I have ordered a desk and a table from a carpenter in Ferke and have moved, finally, into my humble home, out on my own after weeks at Sidibe’s and months with the N’Guessans in Abenke. My new privacy is like letting out a long-held breath.”

If you’ve ever wondered what being in the Peace Corps is like, here’s your chance.
Join us for April MSPC book club meeting when we’ll discuss Sarah Erdman’s Nine Hills to Nambonkaha, Two Years in the Heart of an African Village.

Join us at Rebecca Baker’s home, 334 W. Lynwood, 78212
Friday, April 6th, 12:00 noon.
Bring your own lunch. See you there!

SHANE CLAIBORNE is coming to Travis Park United Methodist Church April 7th

“Religious extremists of all faiths have perverted the best of our traditions. But there is another movement stirring, a little revolution of sorts. Many of us are refusing to allow distorted images of our faith to define us. There are those of us who, rather than simply reject pop evangelicalism, want to spread another kind of Christianity, a faith that has as much to say about this world as it does about the next. New prophets are rising up who try to change the future, not just predict it. There is a movement bubbling up that goes beyond cynicism and celebrates a new way of living, a generation that stops complaining about the church it sees and becomes the church it dreams of. And this little revolution is irresistible.” (from The Irresistible Revolution)

WHAT IF…..Jesus never meant for us to be prosperous, if it means being rich only unto ourselves?
WHAT IF….Christianity demands more than a profession of faith?

If you’ve ever wondered about what it means to be a Christian, to truly follow Jesus…

DON’T MISS SHANE CLAIBORNE!!! Shane is the author of The Irresistible Revolution. He has worked with Mother Teresa, spent time in Iraq, and has committed his life to working alongside the poor. He will be at the Travis Park United Methodist Church Justice in Action Speakers Series to teach us what he believes it means to say: “I am a Christian”.

Join us the Saturday before Easter, on April 7, 2007, starting with a pre-event reception at 6:30 p.m., with the lecture following at 7:00 p.m. All are invited to this free event. Bring a friend! Come and learn about this radical way of living, of thinking, of being. Come and see what Christianity can mean to you, and to our world.

SAMMinistries EXTENDS A CALL FOR BIRDHOUSE ARTISANS

SAMMinistries is extending a call for entries for its 5th Annual
Birdhouse Contest which is becoming an annual favorite for old and young alike.

Folks of all ages are invited to build an original birdhouse from scratch, or simply decorate a ready-made one which can be found in most hobby stores. First, second and third place prizes are awarded in three different age divisions (adult, teen and youth), as well as in the special clay division.

Birdhouses must be made of wood, ceramic or metal. Paper-maché entries will not be accepted. The base must measure no more than 18 inches across, but there is no height limit. Artisans are invited to enter as many birdhouses as they want -- there is no limit!

Entries are to be delivered from 10-5 at Furniture For A Cause, 5254 Blanco Road, on one of the following days: Thursday, April 26; Friday, April 27, or Saturday, April 28.

All entries become the property of SAMMinistries for a sale and auction that will be held from 10-2 on Saturday, May 5 at Furniture For A Cause, 5254 Blanco Road. All proceeds will be used by the ministry to help provide shelter and services for the homeless.
